Uludağ Ski Resort, Bursa: The Best Ski Resort Near Istanbul (My Honest Guide)

Uludag Bursa - ski resort near Istanbul Turkey

Quick answer:
Uludağ ski resort sits on Mount Uludağ above Bursa, about 2.5-3 hours from Istanbul. It’s Turkey’s best-known ski resort and the biggest one near Istanbul, with around 20 runs, two hotel zones and a cable car straight from the city. It’s great for beginners, intermediate skiers and families. Advanced skiers will find it short and easy. The season usually runs from mid-December to March, depending on snow.

If you’re in Istanbul in winter and want real snow without flying east, Uludağ is the one I’d choose. You can be on the slopes the same day you leave the city, and the cable car ride up from Bursa is worth it on its own.

It’s not the Alps, and it doesn’t pretend to be. Here’s what Uludağ is really like, who it’s for, and how to plan 1-3 days of skiing from Istanbul.

Is Uludağ Worth It? Who It’s For

Best for: beginners, intermediate skiers, families, a first ski trip in Turkey, a winter weekend from Istanbul

What I Like About It

  • It’s close. No flight, no long transfer. A bus or ferry to Bursa, then the cable car or a minibus up the mountain.
  • The slopes are friendly. Most runs are wide and gentle, and there are dedicated training areas for first-timers.
  • The cable car. It’s about 9 km long, one of the longest cable cars in the world, and it takes you from the edge of Bursa to the hotel zone in around 30 minutes, over forest and with the whole city below you.
  • You can rent everything on the mountain. There are rental shops and ski instructors all around the hotel zones.
  • Bursa is right there. You can ski in the morning and be soaking in a thermal bath in Bursa by the evening.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Advanced skiers will be bored. Runs are short, and the black slopes feel closer to reds by European standards.
  • It’s expensive on the mountain. Ski passes, rentals, private instructors and even a simple coffee cost more than you’d expect. I’d bring snacks and water up with you.
  • Weekends are packed. Istanbul and Bursa locals come up for the day, so expect queues at the cable car and on the lifts. Weekdays are much calmer.
  • The weather changes fast. Fog and strong wind can close the upper lifts and stop the cable car, sometimes for the whole day.
  • Snow isn’t guaranteed early. Some seasons open in early December, others not until January. Check the snow before you book.

How Many Days Do You Need in Uludağ?

2-3 days is ideal for skiing. That gives you at least one full day on the slopes, time to try both zones, and a backup day if fog or wind closes the lifts.

  • 1 day: possible from Istanbul, but you’ll spend around 8 hours on the road for about 5-6 hours on the mountain. Good for a first taste or for kids who just want snow.
  • 2 days: my minimum for real skiing. Arrive the evening before or early on day one, and ski a full day without rushing back.
  • 3 days: the sweet spot. Ski two days, and add half a day in Bursa or a thermal bath.

How to Get to Uludağ from Istanbul

Organized one-day ski trip: this is my pick when I’m staying in Istanbul and want a quick and easy one-day ski adventure in Mount Uludağ with the logistics sorted. So I’d book a private Uludağ ski day trip from Istanbul. You get hotel pickup and drop-off, a vehicle just for your group, the ferry crossing and national park entry, and around 5-6 hours on the mountain. Ski passes and equipment rental aren’t included, and you pay for them on the spot. The standard ferry route takes about 4 hours each way. A faster motorway route via the Osmangazi Bridge, around 2.5 hours each way, is available for an extra fee agreed in advance.

If you’d rather combine the snow with Bursa’s old town, there are also Bursa and Uludağ day tours with the cable car. But keep in mind, their focus is on sightseeing, with some hours in the Mount Uludağ nature where you can get little time to ski. Make sure to ask and confirm it in advance.

On your own, step 1: Istanbul to Bursa

  • By bus: frequent buses run from Istanbul’s main bus stations to Bursa Terminal, about 2.5-3 hours depending on traffic.
  • By ferry: İDO fast ferries sail from Yenikapı to Güzelyalı (Mudanya), and BUDO from Kabataş to Mudanya. From the port it’s about 30-40 minutes by road to the city. Check the timetables before you go, as winter sailings can be cancelled in bad weather.
  • By car: about 2.5-3 hours to the mountain via the Osmangazi Bridge. Rent a car if you want the most freedom.

Step 2: Bursa to Uludağ

  • Cable car (Teleferik): at about 9 km, it’s Turkey’s longest cable car line. It starts from Teferrüç station in Bursa, passes Kadıyayla and Sarıalan, and ends in the hotel area, in around 22-30 minutes. Bus 94 runs from Bursa Bus Terminal to the station, and bus F/3 from the BUDO pier in Mudanya. Foreign visitors pay a separate, higher fare than Turkish citizens, recently around 1,100-1,300 lira (about $22-27) round trip. Arrive early on weekends, because the queues can be long.
  • Minibus (dolmuş): minibuses go from central Bursa to the hotel zone in winter, in about 1-1.5 hours. This is the better option if you’re carrying your own skis.
  • By car: it’s about 35-40 km from the city, with plenty of hairpin bends. In winter you’ll need winter tires or snow chains, and police stop cars without them at the national park entrance when it snows. Chains are sold and rented along the road up.

Have in mind: carrying skis and snowboards on the cable car has been prohibited for safety reasons. This could change, so check at the station. If you’re bringing your own gear, go up by road, or rent on the mountain.

When to Go Skiing in Uludağ

The ski season usually opens in mid-December and runs through March, sometimes into early April in a snowy year. January and February have the most reliable snow.

The busiest times are the Turkish school semester break (late January to early February), New Year and weekends. My pick is a midweek trip in January or February. Ramadan is another quieter window on the slopes.

Uludağ Slopes: Zone 1 vs Zone 2

Uludağ has two hotel zones, about 1 km apart, each with its own lifts. Different hotels own different lifts, so check what your ski pass covers when you buy it.

  • Zone 1 (1. Gelişim Bölgesi): the older, busier part, with more cafes, shops and rental places. Lots of beginner areas, which also means the most crowds. I’d skip it on weekends.
  • Zone 2 (2. Gelişim Bölgesi): the newer area with the bigger hotels and the longer runs. The cable car arrives here.

The runs I’d pick first:

  • Maden: my top pick for intermediate skiers, longer and with the best views. Stop at the cafe at the start of the run for its meatballs.
  • Tutyeli: high up, with Turkey’s only FIS-certified racing slope plus an easier scenic blue run.
  • Kuşaklıkaya and Italyan: solid alternatives when Maden is busy.

My tip: buy your ski pass online before you go if you can. On busy days the ticket offices can have long waits.

Where to Stay in Uludağ: Mountain or Bursa?

This is the biggest decision for your trip, and here’s how I’d choose:

  • Stay on the mountain if you want ski-in/ski-out and you’re there for 2-3 days of skiing.
  • Stay in Bursa if you want lower prices, better food and the option to sightsee, and go up each day by cable car or minibus.

My pro tips when booking a hotel here:

  • Most mountain hotels are sold as full board or all-inclusive, often with ski passes or equipment as an add-on. Read what your rate includes before you book.
  • Keep in mind that hotel star ratings in Turkey don’t always match Western standards, so I’d treat a 5-star here more like a good 4-star and check recent photos before booking.

On the Mountain

Monte Baia Uludağ (Zone 2) My higher-class pick, and the one I’d choose for families. It’s ski-in/ski-out, with its own gentle blue slope and lift right outside, plus an indoor pool, a hammam and a spa. Keep in mind that Zone 2 is quieter in the evenings, with fewer cafes and bars outside the hotels than Zone 1.

Karinna Orman Evleri (Forest Houses) My simpler pick when I want more privacy: small wooden houses/bungalows in the pine forest, about 700 m from the hotel zone, with ski-in/ski-out access, kitchenettes and a restaurant. It’s quieter and more private than the big hotels, which suits couples and families. Good to know: it’s an alcohol-free property.

Bursa near Mount Uludag - ski resort near Istanbul Turkey

In Bursa

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Crowne Plaza Bursa Convention Center & Thermal Spa – My higher-class pick in the city, for ending a ski day in a big thermal spa, which is free for hotel guests. The Odunluk metro stop is right next to it. The catch: it’s in Nilüfer, on the opposite side of the city from the cable car, so plan for a longer ride each morning.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Holiday Inn Bursa City Centre – My simpler city pick. It’s central, across from the Kent Meydanı shopping center, and buses 15A and 15B from Kent Meydanı go to the cable car station, about 5-6 km away. It’s a modern business hotel with a rooftop terrace, so don’t expect a spa. But it’s worth the rooftop panorama if you’re a big fan of scenic views, like me.

Things to Do in Uludağ If You Don’t Ski

  • Ride the cable car up and back down just for the views
  • Go sledding and play in the snow around the hotel zones
  • Try snowmobiling or an ATV ride
  • Eat sucuk ekmek (grilled sausage in bread), the classic Uludağ snack
  • Spend half a day in Bursa: the Grand Mosque, the Green Mosque and Tomb, the old silk bazaar and a proper İskender kebab, where it was invented

Uludağ vs Kartepe vs Kartalkaya: Best Ski Resorts Near Istanbul

Uludağ (Bursa)about 2.5-3 hoursbeginners, families, a full winter weekendbiggest choice of runs and hotels near Istanbul, busy on weekends
Kartepe (Kocaeli)about 1.5-2 hoursa quick ski daythe closest to Istanbul, but small
Kartalkaya (Bolu)about 3.5-4 hoursa quieter ski holiday in pine forestfewer hotels, longer trip

Wondering about which is the best ski resort in Turkey near Istanbul? – Uludag, Kartepe and Kartalkaya are all suitable for a day or for 2-3 days outside the city.
For a full ski weekend near Istanbul, Uludağ is my pick. If you want the best skiing in Turkey overall, Erciyes (Kayseri) and Palandöken (Erzurum) have longer, steeper runs, but you’ll need to fly.

Kartepe is also an easy add-on to a Sapanca weekend – for me, a great and easy option for a calm, nature getaway from Istanbul -> see my Sapanca weekend guide.
