Is Istanbul Safe to Visit Right Now? (April 2025 Travel Update)

Because of the recent news about protests going on in Istanbul, many travelers are asking: Is it safe to visit Istanbul right now?

Well, while the media may report worrying pictures of Istanbul, the experience of the locals tells a different story. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re planning a trip to Istanbul in 2025, based on my firsthand info.

Why Were There Protests in Istanbul?

The recent protests in Istanbul were a reaction to the arrest of Istanbul’s Mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is part of the opposition in Türkiye. His arrest led to demonstrations, as many citizens of Istanbul viewed it as politically motivated.

The protests began in mid-March 2025 and were mostly centered around Taksim Square and surrounding areas.

The demonstrations of thousands of people were in support of İmamoğlu, and also included a call for democracy and justice. The Turkish government responded by deploying heavy police forces, implementing roadblocks, and even temporarily restricting internet access in certain areas.

The situation escalated when police used tear gas and water to disperse the demonstrating crowds. However, these incidents were largely narrowed to specific areas, and since then the unrest has decreased and even stopped for now.

So by late March 2025, there were almost no signs of protests, except around the Taksim square. Authorities lifted most restrictions, and businesses continued to operate as always.

While occasional small gatherings still occur, they have not bothered or stopped the daily life or tourist activities in Istanbul.

Current Situation in Istanbul

For now, while writing these lines, the protests and demonstrations in Istanbul are over, the situation is normal. So it’s safe in Istanbul right now, as it has been before.

While the protests that happen have been concentrated especially around Taksim Square – a must-visit tourist spot, the majority of Istanbul remained peaceful, and life continues as normal for both locals and tourists.

Right now, there are little to no signs of disruption in Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque, and other popular tourist areas you may want to visit.

You can note the increased presence of the local police, especially near the locations of the protests but this won’t affect the overall safety of your trip nor having your best experience in Istanbul.

After some internet disruptions for a few days and occasional barricades of the transport in the city centre, the main tourist areas remain safe and open. With that in mind, you can feel free to visit Istanbul and enjoy great time here without feeling unsafe.

As about using the public transport – the major transportation spots, including Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport, operate normally as always. Ferries, trams, metro lines and buses are also running as usual.

Safety Tips for Travelers

While Istanbul remains safe for tourists and visits, here are a few tips I have for you – to have safe and enjoyable stay in the city in case you come across protets:

  1. Avoid Protest Areas: If you hear about a planned demonstration, try to avoid these areas. Taksim Square is a common protest location, so be aware and use extra caution in that area.
  1. Stay Informed: Follow local news, government travel advisories and speak with the locals for the last updates while in Istanbul.
  1. Plan Your Transport: Organize your airport transfers in advance. You can use public transport, but just in case have reliable phone numbers for taxis or private transfers from your hotel.

Plan more time for reaching the airport in case of heavy traffic because of public transport- or major boulevards-barricades.
  1. Be Aware of Local Scams: This one is not related to the demonstrations in March, but is a common thing in Istanbul at all.
As in any major city, be mindful of being overcharged in restaurants and taxis. Always check menu prices and your bill. Be prepared with your final destination when using the taxis, insist on using the taximeters and make sure any additional fees are discussed in advance.
  1. Enjoy Local Culture: Engage with locals, try traditional foods, and embrace the hospitality of Istanbul’s people.
  1. Internet Access: Be prepared for potential short-term internet disruptions in response to political events. Some websites like Booking.com may usually not work in Turkey at all, be prepared with using a VPN if needed.
  1. Choose Accommodations Wisely: If you’re worried about safety, avoid demonstration areas like Taksim square (Beyoglu neighborhood). Just stick to the other well-known tourist districts like Sultanahmet or Beşiktaş.
